(Martha’s Vineyard) Louisa Gould Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of new ceramic works by Robert (Bob) Jewett. The exhibit opens on July 26th and runs through August 31st. Bob will offer an artist talk on Thursday, July 28th from 5 – 6 pm and the opening reception will take place on Friday, July 29th from 6 – 8 pm. Please join us for both events - the artist talk on the 28th as well as the opening reception on the 29th to meet the artist.
These unique, beautifully crafted pieces are indicative of the breadth of Bob’s work and years of honing up his skills. The visual inspiration for Bob’s art comes from Martha’s Vineyard where he grew up and has a home. As Bob describes, “sea grass, island roses, and the infinite images found along seashores find their way into my work.” The Shell Series pots are inspired by Bob’s daily walks on Vineyard beaches, collecting shells which are incorporated into his work. The Wave images, in particular, have been a constant focus throughout his career. His concern for landscape also continues to express itself in his pots today. Grass placed against the horizon is a common theme. Bob believes that simple beauty invested in pots enhances the quality of life.
Bob studied with Warren MacKenzie and Curtis Hoard while working on his M.F.A. at the University of Minnesota. He teaches ceramics at St. Paul Academy and Summit School, where he was Chair of the Fine Arts Department and held the Brooks Endowed Chair for Fine Arts. Bob has had exhibitions throughout the Upper Midwest, including solo exhibitions at the Minneapolis Art Institute and the Tweed Museum.
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, July 28th, for the artist talk and on Friday, July 29th, for the opening of Robert Jewett’s new ceramic works. Please note that our new group show, “Vineyard Reflection” will continue through August 2nd. Please come in and browse both shows.
